A Brief History of the School

1963: Following the successful establishment of Cyprus College in 1961, Ioannis and Iro Gregoriou founded The Grammar School which was initially housed in Kritis Street under the name “Private Grammar and Modern Schools” (PGMS). The total number of students who enrolled was 95.

1964: The School moved to a new building in Metochiou Street while its boarding school, which housed students from all over Cyprus as well as England and South Africa, was in Navarinou Street.

1966: In September both School and Boarding School moved to the privately owned premises on a hill that later became known as the “Gregoriou Hill”, near the Nicosia Airport.

1967: The long Grammar School tradition in theatrical performances began with the Greek tragedy of Aeschylus "Prometheus Bound" (“Προμηθέας Δεσμώτης”).   The scenery was designed by the famous Cypriot painter and musician, Andreas Asproftas, who was our Art and Music teacher at the time.

1971: The Grammar Junior School was founded.

1972: The Grammar School became a 7-year-education school and the total number of its students was 1,200. Meanwhile, there was a continuous expansion of the school with additions such as chemistry and physics labs, a large library, a conference hall as well as separate canteens for boys and girls.

1974: The Turkish Invasion took place.  The Grammar School was bombed and consequently occupied by the Turks.

1974-1981: Following the Turkish invasion the school was left operating with only 350 students in rented premises. Ioannis Gregoriou provided housing for refugee students who were living in tents at the time.  Meanwhile, he also helped in the establishment of The Grammar School in Limassol, which was run by his brother Gabriel Gregoriou, to accommodate for the refugee students who moved to Limassol.

1979: The Grammar School Parents and Guardians Association was established.

1980: Sylvana Gregoriou-Eleftheriadou finished her studies in New York and returned to Cyprus.  She joined the Board of Directors and Management Team.

1981: The School moved to its new premises in Deftera.

1984: Ioannis Gregoriou passed away and the Board of Directors, led by Iro Gregoriou, Mrs Sylvana Eleftheriadou and the late Gabriel Gregoriou, appointed Mr Vassos Hajiyerou as Headmaster.

1984: One of our students, Christos Vlachos, was the first Cypriot to win the World Gold Award in the Accounting LCCI Exams which was a great honour for our School.  Since then a large number of our students have won Gold and Silver Pancyprian and World Awards in Accounting.

1985: Mr Akis Gregoriou was appointed Director General by the Board of Directors and joined the management team with Iro Gregoriou and Mrs Sylvana Eleftheriadou.

1985: The first Yearbook was published.  It has evolved into the most reliable source of information as it includes everything about Grammar School life.

1985: The Cultural Evening as we know it today was staged in memory of Ioannis Gregoriou. Our Cultural Evenings are well known for the high level of performance and talent exhibited by our students and staff involved in them.  The Gregoria Sports Day also began in memory of the founder.

1985: The Grammar School Graduates Association was established.

1988: The Grammar School premises expanded with the construction of the new administration buildings.

1988: The Grammar School Clubs evolved and currently there are over 40 Sports, Educational, Social, Cultural, Leisure and Entertainment clubs, involving the vast majority of our students.

1988: School prefects were elected for the first time. School prefects come from Class 7 and their election is based on their academic excellence and leadership skills.

1989: Mrs Marina Koni was appointed Deputy Headmistress.

1990: Our school won the Toastmasters' Debating Competition for the first time.  Since then our students have won a number of National and International Debating Competitions.  Mrs Marina Koni became Headmistress and Mr Vassos Hadjiyerou was appointed Senior Headmaster.

1991: Iro Gregoriou passed away.

1991: Our first group of students attended a European Youth Parliament session in Prague, Czechoslovakia. This was the beginning of Grammar School students attending different programmes in Europe and the United States of America such as the Comenius Programme, Model United Nations, Europe’s Youth Day, United World Youth Council and the International Debate Association.

1992: The Grammar Institute was established.

1994: The Grammar School became an EDEXCEL Examination Centre, one of only three in Cyprus at the time.  Later on our school also became an LCCI Examination Centre.

1996: The Grammar School hosted the Nicosia European Youth Parliament Session. 330 students from 22 countries participated and President Glafkos Clerides received all of them at the Presidential Palace. As we were told by the President of the EYP, it was one of the most successful sessions ever.

1997: The Swimming Pool was built and therefore The Grammar Swimming Club was created.  Swimming and other water sports were added to the Physical Education Curriculum and enriched the club activities.

1997: The Grammar Summer School began operating for the first time and it has been functioning successfully since then.

2000: The late Nicos Mannouris joined the Headmasters’ team.

2000: The Grammar School Girls’ Basketball team won the Pancyprian Championship and represented Cyprus in the Panhellenic Championship.

2001: Our Drama Club won 1st Prize in the Pancyprian Competition with Moliere’s play, “The Dr in spite of himself” and represented Cyprus in Greece where it won the 3rd Panhellenic Prize.  Our school continues to participate in Theatre competitions with distinctions.

2004: The Grammar School Cultural Evening took place at the ancient theatre of Curium with the theme "Cyprus-Europe: Common Ground" («Κύπρος-Ευρώπη: Κοινός Τόπος»), a performance which will remain unforgettable to both audience and participants.

2004: The exchange programme with Ithaca University, USA, began. Since then, two groups of PE teachers complete their training with us every year.

2005: The Talent Show and the Art Exhibition were organised for the first time.  They have both become annual events which give our students the chance to exhibit their many talents.

2006: Mr Hadjiyerou retired and the New Headmasters’ Committee was appointed consisting of Mr Andreas Mios, Mr Andreas Afamis, Mr Andreas Nestorides, Mrs Kam Stylianou, Mr Stelios Stylianou and Mrs Evridiki Pericleous-Papadopoulou.  The Committee was led by Mrs Marina Koni as Senior Headmistress. 

2006: Our School uniform changed becoming more comfortable for the students.  The tie was no longer used as part of the students’ everyday uniform for the first time in 42 years.

2007:  Mr Mios was appointed Senior Headmaster and Mrs Marina Koni retired.

2008: The Poetry and Essay Writing Competition was organised for the first time.  This year it was expanded to include 11 private schools from all over Cyprus.  The standard of the students’ entries was exceptionally high and the competition was concluded with a successful award ceremony dedicated to the poet Yiannis Ritsos.

2008: The Music Festival was organised for the first time.  The Grammar School hosted students from different public elementary schools and thus started a new tradition of successful events for our school.  Also the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme began functioning at our school.  A large number of students receive gold, silver and bronze awards every year.

2009: The Grammar School Boys Basketball team won the Pancyprian Championship and represented Cyprus in the Panhellenic Championship and the World Basketball Championship which took place in Turkey.

2010: Our Drama Club won again 1st Prize in the Pancyprian Competition with Shakespeare’s play "The Taming of the Shrew".

2010: Through the Socrates-Comenius Programme teachers from the UK and France have the opportunity to observe and teach different classes in English and French respectively here at The Grammar School.

2010: All of the classrooms were equipped with interactive whiteboards and projectors, enabling our teachers to enhance their teaching.  All of our teachers have been provided with personal laptops and trained to use the relevant software. A wireless network provides internet access in all classrooms.

2010:  Mr Andreas Mios retired.

2011: The Grammar School Chemistry Department celebrated the International Year of Chemistry 2011 by organising a "Chemistry Open Day". 

School facilities are continuously added.  These include modern canteens, cafeteria and hall of events and parties.  Moreover, our new sports grounds are quite impressive.  These include a football pitch, futsal, tennis, basketball, volleyball, handball and badminton courts, modern pentathlon amenities, changing rooms and many more are planned for the future.
